Old Hippy founders, Jo Anne Armstrong and Dean Phillips opened for business in a small boutique style store on historic Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta in the fall of 1990.
The business grew rapidly, a loyal customer base was quickly established. Old Hippy was on the map and had become a sought out furniture shopping destination in the local market.
Business was doing very well and then exploded when a Japanese businessman happened upon the store in 1992. Arrangements were made and soon four stores were opened in Hokkaido Japan operating as exclusive Old Hippy distributorships. Before long, Old Hippy achieved status and recognition as a respected Canadian furniture exporter.
Interest in Old Hippy's business concept continued through the 90's and expanded through Western Canada by means of distributorship style stores. Old Hippy began Franchising its concept in the year of 2000.
